Carrots in a Bag

Back in March I planted a few carrot seeds in a plastic bag. I thought it would be easier to harvest...if they grew at all. Four months later I pulled out a sweet and juicy carrot! It was actually tastier than the carrots grown in dirt.

  1. Hi Patti,

What time of potting soil did you use, and did you poke holes in the bag for drainage? That's pretty nifty to grow your own carrots!

  2. Hi Diana! I used a mix of dirt and homemade compost. Yes, I did poke several holes in the bottom or the bag and I sealed the bag until sprouts appeared (you know how much I like to make terrariums) watering occasionally. Next time I'll have to figure out a way to keep the bag taller...this carrot bent at the bottom because the bag sagged.

  3. Patti... that's really clever... a plastic bag terrarium! Something else just caught my eye...HOMEMADE COMPOST?! I've been trying to make that for years! First we had a big compost bin with different sections, but then it got too labor intensive. Then, rats would occasionally scare the living daylights out of me when I opened the lid. Then, I tried making compost just in the dirt, but I don't think I turned the pile enough and didn't add the right stuff. Now I'm trying to make some compost in an old rubbermaid container. So far, just lots of flies.. and a wet mess. I think I'd better poke some holes in the bottom. I'd like to get one of those spinner ones, but they are so big and expensive! Any tips for me? Thanks!
